3/4-Time Position: Upper School Instrumental Music Director

Expected Beginning Date: August 2018


Position Description:


The Upper School Instrumental Music teacher will teach:

  • A UC-approved year-long open-enrollment band class
  • A UC-approved year-long select-enrollment combo class
  • Rehearsal / Practice Sessions after school
  • 2 periods a week assisting in the Middle School band program
  • And will run sound for campus events during the school day


This position, along with the other music teachers, will help manage and maintain the music studios, practice rooms, and equipment. You will work with the art department to schedule performances for the year, co-organize and collaborate with the choir and dance teacher on 2 formal concerts, select and train the appropriate students to provide the accompaniment for the annual musical, co-organize the end of year Performing Arts banquet and Student Cabaret, and help provide music for school events, such as Back to School Day, the Annual Parent Auction, Graduation, etc. as needed.


You will also be expected to identify and participate in some off-campus events such as festivals, fairs, clubs, field trips, etc. as desired.


This position qualifies for full benefits and requires co-curricular duties that include serving as an advisor and leading community service work.



Core Qualifications:


  • Bachelors Degree with emphasis or coursework in instrumental music performance, music theory, music history and appreciation, or something comparable.
  • Minimum 3 years of recent experience teaching instrumental music
  • Experience organizing and running bands of diverse styles, sizes, and experience levels, and the ability to adapt and design repertoire for unusual and challenging instrumentation.
  • Experience in using a developmental methodology for exposing and teaching students in a wide range of styles including music from around the world.
  • Experience and expertise in maintaining equipment, sound systems, and classroom facilities.
  • Experience working with high school-age students
  • Ability to collaborate with a small art department
  • Demonstrated commitment to multi-cultural understanding, education for democracy, justice, equity, inclusion, community service, and environmental stewardship.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • BFA or MFA or teaching credential in art
  • Experience as a performing musician
  • Experience with Jazz, Classical, Rock, Funk, Pop, Blues, Latin, and other world music styles.
  • Experience with digital music, practice applications, recording technology, sequencing and notation.
  • Original composition and arranging
  • A connection with the local music scene
  • Understanding of independent schools
