Children’s Day School (CDS) in San Francisco is looking for an experienced and passionate art teacher to lead visual and studio arts classes in our lower school art studio and preschool classrooms. The Preschool/Lower School (PS/LS) art teacher will engage students in exploration of the arts in ways that honor our constructivist and inquiry based teaching approach and will use a variety of discipline specific methods that may include: Studio Habits, Project Based Learning, Arts Integration, Visual Thinking Strategies, Visual Culture, Discipline Based Arts Education. In addition to teaching students, the PS/LS art teacher will work in collaboration with our Middle School art teacher and the Academic Leadership Team to bring vision and leadership to the ongoing work of developing an exceptional visual arts program at CDS. The PS/LS art teacher will also cultivate a deep appreciation for the arts in our community by leading parent education and community art events that celebrate and highlight children’s work.
- Teach discipline specific skills, content knowledge, and practices related to drawing, painting, printmaking, fiber art, simple circuits and ceramics during weekly art classes TK-4th grade.
- Provide weekly art choices in our preschool classrooms.
- Collaborate with the preschool classrooms to develop their art areas, and to connect/integrate with Lower School curriculum to extend students’ classroom learning.
- Provide instruction by which students can appreciate cultures around the world for artistic contributions.
- Embrace and maintain fiber arts program using our unique resources here at CDS and teach students about wool and silk cultures.
- Foster and encourage the socio-emotional growth of each student. Highlight artists from the diverse cultures in each classroom as examples of artistic talent.
- Exhibit and regularly rotate student artwork throughout campus
- Write biannual progress report narratives for each classroom, and ongoing communication to parents as needed.
- Facilitate the creation of student art needed for the Winter Performance and Country Fair.
- Participate actively in weekly meetings with colleagues, supervisors, and specialists.
- Oversee and manage art budget.
- In collaboration with the Director of Teaching and Learning and the middle school art program, document a scope and sequence (PS – 4) that aligns with core values and practices at CDS and clearly outlines the progression of learning goals in the ECP and Lower School art program.
- Lead parent education and community art events (as needed and requested) that celebrate and highlight learning in the arts.
- Cultivate and oversee a team of parent volunteers to help with student art displays, shows and returning art to families.
- Provide leadership and vision for cohesive hallway bulletin boards for the Lower School building, along with guidelines and best practices for rotating displays over the course of each school year.
- Lead after school art enrichment classes or clubs.
- Share in community responsibilities such as yard supervision shifts and other general duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art or Visual Art Studies or equivalent experience as a working artist
- 3+ years experience planning lessons and teaching art to early childhood and elementary students
- Strong content area knowledge and classroom management skills
- Know how to operate an automatic kiln and be able to teach ceramic handbuilding techniques and glazing
- Know how to teach students to spin, dye, felt and weave with wool from our sheep
- Ability to take initiative, work passionately and joyfully, and form effective partnerships with teachers, administrators and parents
- Strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to incorporating this work into the teaching of art
- Experience with Responsive Classroom (and/or willingness to be trained)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
