The College Preparatory School
Three-quarter or full-time position
The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a three-quarter to full-time History teacher starting the fall of 2014. We seek candidates who have a minimum of 3 to 5 years teaching experience and some graduate training in history, who have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community, and who are eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment. Teachers thrive at College Prep when they partake in the opportunities offered by a rich co-curricular program and a tightly knit, diverse community.
The College Prep history program is unique, innovative and rigorous. Three yearlong courses are required: World Civilizations (in the 9th grade), The Atlantic World (in the 10th grade) and U.S. History (in the 11th grade). Beyond the required courses, the vast majority of College Prep students choose to take one or more one-semester history electives. Recent electives include Linguistics, Economics, Archaeology, and U.S. History since 1945. History teachers work closely with one another as teams for particular courses and across the curriculum.
This position will be ¾ or full-time, depending upon the school’s staffing needs. It will include sections of either 9th or 10th grade History and perhaps a section of a seminar. Section sizes average 16 students. Candidates are expected to adapt to an existing curriculum as well as contribute their ideas to enhance the overall history program. In addition, they take a share of other departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities, most of them during the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. school day. The salary is competitive. All faculty enjoy sharing a prepared lunch ever day.
