First Grade Head Teacher: One-Year Leave Replacement

The San Francisco School
Job Announcement
FIRST GRADE HEAD TEACHER: One-Year Leave Replacement
Starts August 2013

Overview of Position
The San Francisco School seeks a First Grade Head Teacher to inspire students with a multicultural, unbiased and meaningful curriculum. Teachers at The San Francisco School collaborate extensively to create an integrated multidisciplinary program where reasoning and expression are taught across all subject areas. Overarching questions guide the curriculum and student thinking. Teachers share in overall management of the program. All teachers also come together on a regular basis to examine student work, discuss best teaching practices, and hone professional skills. Teacher responsibilities outside the classroom include working closely with the 1st Grade Teaching Intern as well as other grade level teacher(s) on a regular basis. The position also includes writing report cards/comments twice a year, conferencing with parents twice a year, and maintaining consistent communication with the parents of the students in the class via a weekly newsletter. The position would officially start in August of 2013. However, ideally, there will be time to “train” with our current teacher at mutually agreeable dates in the spring of 2013.

Qualifications sought
We seek a talented teacher who can inspire students. Candidates must have successful teaching experience and exhibit excellent communication skills. Cultural competence and the ability to work collaboratively in a teaching team are essential. Candidates should be student-centered, practiced in differentiated instruction and skilled at honing student skills. A teaching credential or a related MA degree and three years of successful work as a teacher are recommended. Lastly, because the majority of the students will be coming from our Montessori preschool, knowledge of Montessori theory and methods is useful but not required.

Overview of School
The San Francisco School is an independent school, pre-K through eighth grade, with a commitment to a multicultural and inclusive community. Suitably characterized by one parent as an “urban school with a village atmosphere,” The School embraces San Francisco’s ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity. Our progressive approach to education encourages children to develop self-reliance, solid academic skills, creativity, and a sense of social justice. Students learn to think like disciplinarians in a field, consider big and central ideas, and can find and develop their own passions. They graduate academically prepared, inquisitive, courageous, and eager for the challenges ahead.
