Evening Custodian

Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton (SHS) is seeking well-qualified and dependable candidates for a full-time evening custodian position in the Operations department.

Summary of Position
The successful candidate will perform a wide variety of custodial duties in order to provide a clean, orderly and safe environment. Additional related work as required. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 2:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

Job duties, include, but are not limited:
•Ability to follow all safety rules including reading MSDS for compliance
•Thorough cleaning of restrooms, locker rooms, gyms, lunchrooms, offices and classrooms (as assigned)
•Service rooms replacing paper products, personal hygiene items, soaps, etc.
•Empty trash/recycling receptacles in restrooms, classrooms and offices
•Vacuum, sweep or mop all floors
•Sweep entrances to their assigned buildings
•Dust areas-furniture, woodwork, sills, pictures, pianos, etc.
•Maintain all storage/janitorial closets in an orderly, safe and neat condition
•Responsible for keeping storage closets stocked with appropriate cleaning agents
•Responsible for keeping cleaning carts properly stocked with appropriate materials
•Responsible for more thorough cleaning at least twice a year
•Night Custodians must secure buildings in which they work
•Responsible for informing supervisor of anything unusual in area of responsibility
•Answers all page calls for assistance
•Helps with maintenance or custodial work outside regularly assigned areas when necessary including setting up and breaking down areas for school scheduled events
•Attends training/safety meetings as required

Working Conditions:
•Work areas are in and outside of school facilities.

•Commercial cleaning chemicals
•Commercial cleaning supplies
•Cleaning equipment (vacuum, mop, broom, rake, blower and power-wash machines, buffers, strippers, extractors and vacuums)

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions (reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions):
•This position is considered moderately to highly physical, and requires a lot of standing, bending, lifting and walking.
•Approximately 95% of time is spent standing or moving around work area, and approximately 5% of time is spent working at a desk, or sitting.
•The ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis is necessary for transporting supplies and goods.
•The ability to stoop, kneel, carry, ascend/descend stairs, climb ladder, push and pull on a regular basis.
•Clear diction and acute hearing are necessary for effective communication with co-workers and students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
•Good written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and cooperatively with co-workers, students, other departments, and management on a daily basis.
•Wears protective equipment and clothing as needed.
•Wears clean and presentable uniform/clothing daily.
•The ability to learn and apply safe work practices, including hazardous waste management and handling, injury and illness prevention program, confined space procedures and safe chemical practices.
•Ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to motivate self and to work professionally with co-workers.
•Demonstrates ability to originate constructive and appropriate action to achieve results.
•Ability to follow through on tasks to completion in a timely manner.
•Demonstrates the ability to maintain a service attitude and approach to students and other members of the community.
•Demonstrates good attendance, neatness, punctuality, accuracy, and personal hygiene.

Qualifications:
•Must be able to read, write, understand and take direction in English.
•High school diploma or general educations degree (GED); and one year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•Ability to bend, stoop, load, carry, ascend/descend stairs, climb ladder, push and pull.
•Must be able to frequently, safely and comfortably lift at least 50 lbs
•Ability to operate tools, and use cleaning chemicals according to safe work practices.
•Must be able to work variable shifts and overtime at different locations upon occasion.
•Must have a valid CA Driver’s License Must provide a copy of a valid CA Driver license upon request.
•At least two years’ similar experience in custodial and/or janitorial work.
•Evening custodians must feel comfortable working at night, in isolated and/or empty work areas and in the dark, when necessary.
•Must be able to comfortably and safely climb, bend, pull, reach, kneel, stoop and see for near and far work.
•Willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the SHS community.

Preferred qualifications include prior experience in a school environment and experience working with environmentally-friendly techniques and products

This is a year-round position. The advertised position offers competitive compensation. SHS has a policy of making health and welfare benefits available to employees, including long-term substitute teachers who meet the requisite criteria, based on the length of assignment and subject to the plan parameters, including medical and dental coverage.
