One-semester Three-Quarter Time Teaching Position
Spring semester – January to June, 2015
The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, is searching for a dynamic and innovative English teacher beginning in January and ending in early June of 2015. We seek candidates who have a minimum of 3 to 5 years teaching experience and some graduate training in English. Candidates should have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community and should be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment.
This position will be three-quarter time. It will include two sections of 10th grade English and one section of a semester-long 11th/12th grade seminar called Strange Journeys. Sections average 16 students. Applicants must be able to teach across an innovative curriculum and, at the tenth grade level, collaborate with other teachers on developing common reading assignments and assessments. Candidates must also feel comfortable teaching a single section upper-level seminar.
Candidates should also be prepared to spend additional time getting to know and help students outside of the classroom. In addition to their classroom responsibilities, College Prep teachers take a share of other departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities, most of them during the 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. school day.
