Redwood Day School

Job Description and Desired Qualifications

The School Counselor/Health Educator will work as a member of a cohesive team to support the social and emotional well being of the student community at Redwood Day. This individual will collaborate with Division Directors, Learning Specialists, Dean of Students, and/or the Assistant Head of School to provide individual and group counseling to Redwood Day students as well as consult with and support Redwood Day parents as a networker of care on an as-needed basis. Essential to the counseling role is the ability to participate in case management, assess the therapeutic needs of individual students and to help coordinate or refer any necessary counseling with off-campus health providers. As the Health Educator, this individual will provide a developmentally sensitive, comprehensive, and holistic health education curriculum to 4-8th grade students, pushing into each grade level at defined points in the school year. This counselor/teacher will have a strong commitment to getting to know each student, the ability to build genuine relationships, to lead lessons on sensitive topics, including gender, sexuality, relationships, consent, and drugs and alcohol, and to differentiate instruction for a diverse group of students. Additionally, the School Counselor/Health Educator will lead professional development programs for the faculty on student mental and physical health issues with an emphasis on equity, inclusion, and wellness and participate in Middle School overnight trips as needed.

Schedule and Hours:

This is a part-time (0.75 FTE), exempt position and begins in August  2019

Essential Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related field
  • Licensed LCSW or MFT is preferred
  • Experience as a school counselor in an elementary/middle school setting
  • Excellent record keeping/documentation skills and written and oral communication
  • Strong collaboration experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Experience in working with upper elementary and middle school aged students and leading/facilitating discussions around human development
  • Candidate must have a natural rapport with children and good classroom management skills.
