Redwood Day School

Job Description and Desired Qualifications

The K-5 Physical Education Teacher will provide wellness and physical health education tailored for a wide range of abilities. Utilizing cardiovascular training, interactive play and physical games, team sports, varied activities, good sportsmanship, and cooperative games, each student has the opportunity to gain an appreciation for physical activity that engenders a life-long habit of activity and exercise. This teacher will partner with the 6-8 PE Teacher/Athletic Director to develop and align the curriculum vertically. This teacher will also coach a minimum of one season of middle school athletics each academic year and participate in teaching after-school micro-sports academies. The ideal individual will be familiar with national standards around physical literacy and engage students in their own discovery and empowerment around physical fitness and positive body image. Further, the ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to meeting the learning needs of each student, a teaching style that supports differentiation of instruction, a collaborative spirit, and an interest in building a community. Additional responsibilities include supervisory duties, active involvement in collaborative divisional meetings, and participation in various student and community activities.

This is a full-time position, beginning August 2020.

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Experience in teaching physical education and coaching elementary school-aged children
  • A natural rapport with children; understanding of developmental needs of 5-10-year-olds
  • Highly effective classroom management skills
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating diverse, equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students

Desired Qualifications and Traits:

  • Teaching credential or Masters Degree in Education (preferred)
  • Experience with interdisciplinary teaching and differentiation 
  • Experience and familiarity with the growth mindset and flexibility to adapt
