Biology/AP Environmental Science Teacher, 3/4-Time Teaching Position

The College Preparatory School
Biology/AP Environmental Science
Three-Quarter Time Teaching Position
Fall semester, 2014
The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a three-quarter time science teacher for the fall semester (mid-August to the end of December) of 2014.  The person selected will teach a combination of biology and AP Environmental Science. Both courses include a substantial laboratory component, requiring set up and break down. Candidates are expected to adapt to an existing curriculum as well as contribute their ideas to enhance the overall science program. They should have a combination of teaching experience (at least 3-5 years experience at the high school or college level) and graduate training in science.
The College Prep science program is unique, innovative and rigorous. Three year-long courses are required: Physical Science which interweaves physics and chemistry to provide a basis for further study of laboratory sciences; Chemistry, taken in the sophomore year; and Biology taken in the junior year. Beyond the required courses, the vast majority of College Prep students choose to take one or more science electives. The year-long electives are Advanced Physics, AP Physics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry and AP Environmental Science. Recent semester electives include Astronomy, Issues in Science, Genetics and Animal Behavior. Students use both texts and teacher-produced material in classes. Science teachers work closely with one another as teams for particular courses and across the curriculum.
Candidates should be prepared for the special claims of an independent school and for the commitment required by a demanding and rewarding academic environment. Teachers thrive at College Prep when they stir and share the intellectual energy and curiosity of our well-prepared and motivated students and when they partake in the opportunities offered by a rich co-curricular program and a tightly-knit, diverse community. A much appreciated and enjoyed benefit is a prepared lunch for faculty and staff.
