The Berkeley School is a progressive, pre-K through eighth grade independent school located on two campuses in the heart of Berkeley.  The school’s mission — to ignite curious minds, awaken generous hearts, and engage a changing world — attracts students from throughout the Bay Area. The Elementary Division Head is a member of the Instructional Administration Team, participates in Senior Administration Team meetings as requested, and is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of yearly K-5 program execution support the mission, vision, and learning outcomes of the school. The Elementary Division Head works with approximately 22 faculty members, including the K-5 Learning Support team, and reports to the Head of School.

  • ability to communicate clearly, decisively, and accurately, showing appropriate consideration for circumstances and audience.

  • demonstrated understanding of and commitment to practices that promote inclusivity, diversity, and cultural competency among all community members

  • significant classroom teaching experience within the K-5 level.

  • comfort and ease with communicating to, with, and among various constituencies:  children, families, faculty, and administrators.

  • understanding of child development, pedagogical theory, and research relevant to K-5 education.

  • commitment to staying current on research in education, independent schools, and child development.

  • ability to supervise and mentor faculty and staff successfully in support of the school’s mission and learning outcomes.

  • advanced degrees strongly preferred.
