Associate School Counselor

The Bay School of San Francisco invites qualified candidates to apply to join our counseling team as an Associate School Counselor.  The selected candidate will join us in the spring of 2014 and work through June 2016 helping to support the social and emotional development of our students while accruing hours towards MFT or LCSW licensure.  The counselor will work individually with students, facilitate groups and serve as a wellness educator on topics such as healthy relationships, sexuality and stress reduction.
The Associate School Counselor joins our student support team which consists of our clinical director (who, with over a decade of experience working with adolescents started the counseling services program at Bay) a Senior Associate School Counselor (an established MFTi with roots in teen education and mindfulness) and our Deans and Learning Services Professionals (who collectively bring a deep well of diverse experience working with teens in school settings.)  Through close collaborative work the Associate School Counselor will become experienced with the multitude of issues that present in adolescence as obstacles to learning and how to effectively address them. 
The Associate’s role will be to cultivate supportive, thoughtful and compassionate relationships with colleagues, and contribute to a similar environment within the counseling office where students come to explore issues of concern.  The Associate must communicate effectively and clearly with parents and see that students receive referrals to and appropriate support from outside resources as needed.  The ability to make good use of consultation in order to make accurate assessments and interventions is essential.  When sufficiently prepared, the Associate will serve as liaison between the school and outside mental health professionals.
The Associate School Counselor will receive weekly individual supervision and group consultation on-site.  Training will include regular readings and discussion related to the treatment of adolescents and young adults as well as a yearly training off-site.  The Associate Counselor will become acquainted with the broader professional community in San Francisco and will be invited to attend monthly meetings of The Bay Area Independent School Health Association.
This position requires a commitment of two academic years running from August to June with numerous school vacations and a two month summer holiday.  A stipend of $7,500 to cover travel and parking expenses is included as are healthy school lunches and elective participation in faculty/staff meetings.  Qualifications include a master’s degree in counseling psychology or a related field, current state board registration as an intern psychotherapist (ASW or MFTI), and relevant counseling experience including clinical experience with adolescents/teens (experience within a school community is preferred).
