Overview of School:
Park Day School, a progressive independent school founded in 1976, offers an outstanding K-8 program to over 300 students. The program is rooted in the tenets of progressive education and reinforces 21st Century pedagogy. The school community embraces the ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic diversity of Oakland. Overview of the Position:
The 7th and 8th grade science teacher is responsible for providing a challenging and progressive science program, including teaching, curriculum design/development, student assessment, and parent communication. This long-term substitute would also serve as an 8th grade advisor and work collaboratively to craft integrated academic and social emotional learning. The science teacher works closely with the Middle School staff to collectively inspire and support the overall development of the 125 Middle School students. All Park Day teachers participate in stewarding the ongoing development of the school.
Candidates must be well versed in progressive educational theory and best practice, be culturally competent, have at least two years of exemplary science specific classroom teaching experience in Middle School and have strong overall communication skills. We seek teachers who find joy in working with middle school students and know how to inspire them to take charge of their own learning. A deep understanding of constructivist teaching practices and of progressive school education and culture is strongly desired.
The science curriculum is not based on a text book and is project based. The substitute will be expected to follow this overall scope and sequence, but design own lesson plans.
7th grade: Life sciences (classification, genetics, human anatomy and physiology)
8th grade: Physical sciences (physics and energy)
