7th & 8th Grade English Teacher

Katherine Delmar Burke School is an independent K-8 girls’ school located on a 3 ½- acre campus in San Francisco. Position Summary
7th & 8th Grade English Teacher and 8th Grade Advisor, full-time, starting Aug. 20, 2013

Position Description
In addition to teaching 7th and 8th grade English classes (21 – 23 students per section), responsibilities include advising a group of 11-12 8th graders. English curriculum emphasizes study of multicultural and classic literature; expository, analytical and creative writing using Six Traits approach to instruction and assessment; vocabulary development; and grammar instruction. Classes generally meet in 55-minute periods, 5 days in each 6-day rotation. Advisories meet daily for homeroom and twice each rotation for discussion and activities; advisor coaches advisees through two student-led parent conferences each year. Routine expectations include writing high school recommendation letters for all 8th graders; supervisory duties and extra-help periods; assessing and reporting in writing on student progress; communication with parents; collaboration; ongoing curriculum review and revision; accompanying students on outdoor education trips; and participation in the professional life of the school.

Position Qualifications
B.A. and experience teaching English are required, as are demonstrated expertise in the teaching of writing, confidence in differentiation of instruction, cultural competency, and innovative use of technology in instruction. Preferred: middle-school experience, familiarity with expectations of high school English curricula, and degree in English or related field.
