Events and Conferences
Each academic year POCIS organizes a number of events to support students, families, teachers and administrators of color at independent schools.
Three times a year our community publishes events, observations, and shout-outs. Submissions are always welcome.
Educator Tribute Awards
In honor of the Northern California’s POCIS 15 Year Anniversary, we are pleased to announce the recipients of our first Educator Tribute Awards to outstanding educators of color leading their communities in racial justice work within POCIS GOLD member schools. For the school year 2012/2013 the winners are:
Carli Lowe from Children’s Day School,
Debbie Schafgans from the Athenian School,
Kal Balavenkatesan from the AthenianSchool and
Christine Godinez from Lick-Wilmerding
POCIS Conferences include workshops on topics such as identity formation, provide a safe space for conversations on identity and provide students and adults tools to advocate for equity and inclusion at their schools.
POCIS sponsors networking events at national conferences and in the Bay Area to help connect teachers and administrators who are working towards bringing more diversity in their schools.
Each year POCIS sponsors a scholarship program for seniors of color at independent schools.
